A person1 who finds an object which he believes or has reasonable grounds for believing is treasure2 must notify the coroner for the district3 in which the object was found before the end of the notice period4, that period being 14 days beginning with the day after the find5 or, if later, the day on which the finder first believes or has reason to believe the object is treasure6. Any person who fails to comply with this provision is guilty of an offence7. In proceedings for such an offence it is a defence for the accused to show that
