The responsible clinician1 may grant any patient2 who is for the time being liable to be detained in a hospital3 under the Mental Health Act 19834 leave to be absent from the hospital subject to such conditions, if any, as he considers necessary in the interests of the patient or for the protection of other persons5. Leave may be granted indefinitely6, or on specified occasions, or for any specified period; and where it is granted for a specified period, the period may be extended by further leave granted in the absence of the patient7.
