Subject to certain exceptions, a patient1 admitted to hospital2 in pursuance of an application for admission for treatment3, a hospital order without restrictions4, an admission order without restrictions5 or a transfer direction without restrictions6 and a patient placed under guardianship in pursuance of a guardianship application7 or order8 may be detained in a hospital or kept under guardianship for a period not exceeding six months beginning with the day of admission or of acceptance of the guardianship application or of the order or direction9, as the case may be, but not for any longer period unless the authority for
