A patient1 may be admitted to a hospital2, and there detained for the period allowed3, in pursuance of an application for admission for assessment4. The patient may apply to the appropriate tribunal5 within the period of 14 days beginning with the day of his admission6.
An application for admission for assessment may be made7 in respect of a patient on the grounds: (1) that he is suffering from mental disorder8 of a nature or degree which warrants his detention in a hospital9 for assessment, or assessment followed by medical treatment10, for at least a limited period11; and (2) that he
