A local social services authority1 may approve a person to act as an approved mental health professional2 for the purposes of the Mental Health Act 19833. However, a local social services authority may not approve a registered medical practitioner4 to act as an approved mental health professional5. The local social services authority must keep a record of all persons that it approves as approved mental health professionals6.
Before approving a person under these provisions, a local social services authority must be satisfied that the person has appropriate competence7 in dealing with persons who are suffering from mental disorder8.
