Subject to the exceptions described below, a person may not fit contact lenses unless he is a registered medical practitioner1, a registered optometrist or a registered dispensing optician2, and if he does so he is liable on summary conviction to a fine3.
The above prohibition does not apply to the fitting of contact lenses by a person recognised by a medical authority4 as a medical student if carried out as part of either a course of instruction or an examination approved by that authority for medical students5. The General Optical Council6 may by rules exempt from the prohibition the fitting
