In order to provide certain optical services optometrists and dispensing opticians are required to be registered on the register held by the General Optical Council1 and the use of certain titles is an offence when not so registered2. A registered dispensing optician may register a speciality enabling him to administer, sell, supply and prescribe certain prescription only medication3. The professions of optometrist and dispensing optician are exempted professions for the purposes of statutory protection for rehabilitated persons4.
