If a registered medical practitioner1 believes a patient he is attending has food poisoning or a notifiable disease or syndrome2, or is otherwise infected or contaminated in a way that may cause significant harm to others, he has a duty to notify the local authority3. This obligation also applies in relation to a suspected disease, infection or contamination in a dead body4.
