Much of the legislation and subordinate legislation concerned with the practice of medicine and the organisation and control of the national health service enacted up to 1968 contained references to the Minister of Health, whose office was established by the Ministry of Health Act 1919. In 1968 all functions of the Minister of Health were transferred to the Secretary of State for Social Services1, and the Ministry of Health was dissolved2.
