Regulations made by the General Medical Council1 provide2 for a licence to practise3 to be granted to a medical practitioner on first registration under the Medical Act 1983 as a medical practitioner with full registration4, on being provisionally registered5, and in such other cases or circumstances as are prescribed6. The regulations include provision for a licensing authority7 to refuse to grant a licence to practise for a medical practitioner (notwithstanding the medical practitioner's registration8) in any case where the person has not demonstrated the necessary knowledge of English to the authority9.
