A registered dentist1 is an existing specialist for the purposes of the entry of his name in a specialist list2 if he applies to the registrar3, within the specified period4, for his name to be entered in any list of orthodontists or, as the case may be, oral surgeons kept by the General Dental Council5, paying any fee determined by the Council, and satisfies him that he falls within the specified criteria6. A person falls within the specified criteria if: (1) he is, or has been, a consultant in the national health service7 in the specialty in question8; or
