The Nursing and Midwifery Council1 must establish and maintain a register of qualified nurses, midwives and nursing associates2. The Council must from time to time: (1) establish the standards of proficiency3 necessary to be admitted to the different parts of the register, being the standards it considers necessary for safe and effective practice under that part of the register4; and (2) prescribe5 the requirements to be met as to the evidence of good health and good character in order to satisfy the registrar6 that an applicant is capable of safe and effective practice as a nurse, midwife or nursing
