The General Optical Council1 must appoint persons to be clinical advisers and may appoint persons to act as specialist advisers on issues on which, in the Council's opinion, specialist knowledge is required2. Persons appointed to be clinical advisers must have specialist expertise in a particular field or fields and persons appointed to be specialist advisers must have particular expertise in the specialty for which they are appointed3.
Clinical advisers are appointed for the purpose of giving advice to the fitness to practise committee and the registration appeals committee4 on health related issues under consideration by the committee and, if specialist
