242. Reserve power to limit rent under the Landlord and Tenant Act 1985.

The appropriate national authority1 may by order provide for:

(1)     restricting or preventing increases of rent2 for dwellings3 which would otherwise take place4; or

(2)     restricting the amount of rent which would otherwise be payable on new lettings5 of dwellings6;

and may so provide either generally or in relation to any specified description of dwelling7.

The purpose of this provision is not to counter inflation, but to confer a reserve power to be exercised by the appropriate national authority if it reasonably judges it necessary or desirable to protect tenants from hardship caused by increased or excessive rents
