A tenancy entered into on or after 15 January 1989 cannot generally be a protected or statutory tenancy under the Rent Act 19771.
Transitional provisions preserve the pre-existing statutory protection in a number of cases where a new tenancy is granted on or after 15 January 1989 to a tenant who was previously a protected or statutory tenant2; but this protection does not apply to protected shorthold tenants
