Subject to transitional provisions1, the Commissioners for Revenue and Customs ('the Commissioners') must appoint such number of rent officers2 for all the registration areas in England ('the specified areas') as they consider necessary3. They may appoint rent officers for fixed periods and may suspend or dismiss them4; and they must remunerate rent officers and must determine the amounts of their remuneration having regard to any representations from such persons as they accept as being representative of rent officers5.
The Commissioners must:
(1) provide office accommodation and clerical and other assistance for rent officers;
(2) allocate work as between rent officers;
