This section deals primarily with the settlement of disputes between states. Members of the United Nations1 must settle their international disputes by peaceful means2. The parties to any dispute whose continuance is likely to endanger the maintenance of international peace and security must seek a solution by non-judicial means (negotiation, inquiry, mediation, conciliation)3, by adjudication (arbitration, judicial settlement)4
