173.     Hot pursuit.

Hot pursuit is the immediate and continuous pursuit of a ship from the waters of coastal State in order to stop or arrest it beyond those waters. The United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea stipulates certain conditions that must be fulfilled if hot pursuit is to be lawful1.

The hot pursuit of a foreign ship on the high seas may be undertaken when the competent authorities of the coastal state have good reason to believe that the ship has violated the laws and regulations of that state2. The right arises
