8. Policies, guidance and concessions.

UK Visas and Immigration1 issues policy documents in the form of internal instructions and procedural guidance to immigration staff2. UK Visas and Immigration's internal instructions were originally referred to as the Immigration Directorate Instructions ('IDI's), but are gradually being replaced by Modernised Guidance ('MG'). There are also Asylum Policy Instructions ('API's) and Nationality Guidance3.

Policy instructions are issued pursuant to the power in the Immigration Act 1971 which provides that in the exercise of their functions under that Act immigration officers must act in accordance with such instructions (not inconsistent with the Immigration Rules4) as may be given them by
