The administration of the Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974 is principally the responsibility of the Secretary of State1.
The Secretary of State appoints, and may remove, the chair and members of the Health and Safety Executive2. The Executive is under his control3 and it is his duty to remunerate it4. His consent is required both to the Executive's approval of codes of practice5 and to the withdrawal of such approval6. The Secretary of State has power to make health and safety regulations for the general purposes
