The safety of lifting equipment1 and lifting operations2 involving such equipment is governed by the Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 19983, which came into force on 5 December 19984. Those regulations apply both in and, in certain circumstances, outside5 Great Britain6; and the requirements imposed by them on an employer7:
(1) in respect of lifting equipment, apply in relation to lifting equipment provided for use or used by an employee8 of his at work9;
(2) also apply:
(a) to a relevant self-employed person10, in respect of lifting equipment he uses at work;
(b) subject to the exception for
