An index map search1 should be made in any case where unregistered land is being bought. It may also be helpful when the land being purchased comprises several different title numbers. Any person may apply to the Land Registry2 for an official search of the index map3. A fee is payable4 and a plan may be needed5. The information revealed by the search will state whether the land is already registered or is subject to a pending application or caution against first registration or the existence of a rentcharge.
