582. The Athens Convention and the EU Carriage by Sea Regulation.

The carriage1 of passengers and their luggage by sea is governed by the Athens Convention as amended by the 2002 Protocol2, as applied and augmented in the EU by the EU Carriage by Sea Regulation3. The Convention applies to any international carriage4 and to carriage by sea within a single member state on board specified classes of ships5 where:


    (1)     the ship is flying the flag of or is registered in an EU member state6;


    (2)     the contract of carriage has been made in an EU member state7; or
