In practice most modern charterparty forms deal expressly with events that will put a vessel off-hire1. Whether a vessel is off-hire depends on the interpretation of the precise clause involved, on which there are a large number of decisions, many of which are however not of great use for other clauses2.
If, on the due date for payment of hire, the vessel is off hire, the charterers' obligation to pay the next instalment of hire is suspended
