When the carrier1 is liable for the loss of or damage to luggage or animals2 he must pay compensation up to a limit of 1,400 units of account per passenger3.
Different limits apply in respect of registered luggage4. In the case of total or partial loss5 the carrier must pay, to the exclusion of all other damages, either compensation equal to the proved amount of the loss or damage suffered6 or, if the amount of the loss or damage suffered is not established, liquidated damages7, although in each case the amount payable is subject to an upper limit8.
