Consequent to the UK's withdrawal from the EU, this Halsbury paragraph should be read in conjunction with the Maritime Transport Access to Trade and Cabotage (Revocation) (EU Exit) Regulations 2019, SI 2019/488, pending incorporation of the changes into the text.

Canal companies1 are authorised by statute to carry as common carriers on canals and railways and to carry out functions incidental to such carriage2. Provision is also made at EU level for the use of inland waterways by carriers of goods and passengers3.
