429. Bills of lading: multimodal carriage.

Bills of lading are essentially sea transport documents: there can be no bill of lading issued for wholly terrestrial carriage. However, it seems that, provided that carriage is predominantly by sea, a bill of lading in respect of such carriage does not cease to have the characteristics of a bill of lading merely because a subsidiary portion of the carriage falls to be undertaken by some other means, such as road or rail. A number of forms of multimodal bill of lading are in common use for such situations
