402. The Secretary of State.

Acts of Parliament relating to British nationality confer various powers and duties on the Secretary of State1. The office of Secretary of State is a unified office, and in law each Secretary of State is capable of performing the functions of all or any of them2. In practice, functions relating to British nationality mostly belong to the Secretary of State for the Home Department, who is commonly known as the Home Secretary3.

The Secretary of State may arrange for any of his functions (except his powers to make regulations or rules4) relating to:


    (1)     registration and naturalisation5;


    (2)     renunciation, resumption
