Prior to 1 January 19491, the status of British subject was the single common nationality of those owing allegiance to the British Crown2.
From 1949 to 1982 inclusive, the class of British subjects3 included all citizens of the United Kingdom and colonies4, all citizens of the Commonwealth countries mentioned in the British Nationality Act 1948, 5and certain Irish citizens6. The class also included certain British subjects holding that status only, without any other nationality or citizenship
