The hirer must return the hired chattel at the expiration of the agreed term1. This obligation applies notwithstanding the fact that the task of returning the chattel has become more difficult or costly as a result of some unexpected event occurring independently of the hirer's negligence2. But if the performance of his contract to return the chattel becomes impossible because it has perished, this impossibility excuses the hirer provided it did not arise from the fault of the hirer or from some risk which he had taken upon himself
