29. The distinctive emblems.

The heraldic emblem of the red cross on a white ground, which is the emblem and distinctive sign of the medical service of armed forces1, must be displayed on the flags2, armlets and all equipment employed in the medical service3, and armlets must be worn on the left arm of medical personnel4. Hospital ships5 must have all their exterior surfaces white and one or more dark red crosses must be painted on each side of the hull and on horizontal surfaces; a white flag with a red cross must be flown at the mainmast6. Subject to specified exceptions7, the
