The Conventional Weapons Convention1 contains five protocols2. Protocol I prohibits the use of any weapon the primary effect of which is to injure by fragments which in the human body escape detection by X-rays3; Protocol II imposes certain restrictions on the use of mines, booby-traps and other devices4; Protocol III prohibits or restricts the use of incendiary weapons5; Protocol IV prohibits the employment of laser weapons specifically designed, as their sole combat function or as one of their combat functions, to cause permanent blindness6; and Protocol V deals with the explosive remnants of war7.
