Medical units1, medical transport2 and hospital ships3 are in no circumstances4 to be attacked but must be respected and protected at all times5. Hospital ships are subject to control and search by the conflicting parties6 and must give assistance without distinction of nationality7. Medical personnel and chaplains8 are to be respected and protected9, and, if captured, are to be retained only if the medical or spiritual needs of the prisoners of war so require10.
