163. Welfare of farm animals.

Detailed provision is made by regulation imposing duties on the keepers of farmed animals1, to ensure the welfare of animals under their care, and that a person responsible for a farmed animal takes all reasonable steps to ensure that the conditions under which it is bred or kept comply with those laid down in the regulations2. Additional duties are imposed on the keepers of:

  1.  

    (1)     poultry3;

  2.  

    (2)     more than 350 laying hens4;

  3.  

    (3)     conventionally reared meat chickens5;

  4.  

    (4)     calves confined for rearing and fattening6;

  5.  

    (5)     cattle7;

  6.  

    (6)     pigs8; and

  7.  

    (7)     rabbits9.
