Local authority byelaws1 may authorise the employment2, on an occasional basis by their parents or guardians, of children aged 13 in light agricultural or horticultural work3. This provision is an exception to the general rule prohibiting the employment of children under the age of 144. Byelaws5 may also authorise the employment of children for not more than one hour before the commencement of school hours on any day on which they are required to attend school
