81 Environmental controls on mineral operations

The control of the impact of mineral workings on the environment is dealt with, for the most part, by the town and country planning legislation. The Environmental Protection Act 1990 had little impact on the minerals industry, but subsequent environmental legislation, particularly the Environment Act 1995 and the creation of the Environment Agency and Natural Resources Wales, have brought the regulation of the minerals industry more in line with the mainstream of manufacturing industry.
