It may be important to establish the meaning of the words ‘mine,’ ‘mineral’ or ‘quarry’ when construing reservations or rights granted in conveyances or transfers of land on which mineral working or landfill, is contemplated. This can impact on other development, for example surface development and other development (including the erection of renewable energy technologies such as wind turbines) where the right to work minerals may be prejudiced or there may be a need to install piled foundations or other deep foundations, which may interfere with the mineral substances reserved.
