204 Harmonisation of rights

On 1 January 1998 the United Kingdom implemented an EC Directive harmonising the protection afforded to databases across Europe1. As noted previously2, the more stringent criteria required by other Member States for copyright protection in respect of databases has been adopted into United Kingdom law and it is likely that many databases which would have qualified for copyright protection before January 1998 no longer do so.
