18 Classified roads

The Secretary of State1 formerly had power2 to classify roads for the purpose of advancing money for the construction and improvement of such roads, and subsequently various enactments made other special provisions with respect to such classified roads. Roads ceased to be classified for the purposes of making advances on 1 April 19753, but under the Highways Act 1980 all such highways or proposed highways as immediately before the commencement of the 1980 Act were principal roads4 or classified roads5 and continue to be known as principal or classified roads
