80 USA: term of protection

The US Copyright Act 1976 harmonised copyright laws across the United States of America and abolished all common law and local state legislation providing protection that was equivalent to copyright with effect from 1 January 1978, the date the legislation came into force1. An exception was made in the case of sound recordings fixed before 15 February 1972 where the rights and remedies available under the common law or statutes of any state are preserved until 15 February 20672.
