When agreeing upon the term of a distribution agreement, no less than four separate elements need to be considered, namely the period (or term) the agreement will last, the period of distribution rights to be enjoyed by the distributor, the length of any sell-off period and the extent of any collection period.

The first two elements may appear to be identical (and in many agreements the difference is not of particular relevance) but where a distribution agreement relates to a company's entire catalogue (or certain imprints) and is for a term of (say) two years, the period of distribution
