242 Scope of the Freedom of Information Act

Part I of the Freedom of Information Act 2000 gives a general right of access to information held by public authorities. Public authorities include government departments, local authorities, NHS bodies, the police and the Houses of Parliament. An applicant has a right to be told whether the information requested is held by that authority (the duty on the authority to confirm or deny whether it holds the information) and, if it is held, to have it communicated to him.
