24 Brazil: permitted acts

Law No. 9.610 provides eight specific classes of acts which may be performed without infringing copyright, namely:

  1. 24.1

        the general reproduction right1 (see further below);

  2. 24.2

        the right to reproduce short extracts of a work for the private use of the person who copies it in a single copy provided that the copy of the work is made by that person and is made without gainful intent2;

  3. 24.3

        the quotation in books, newspapers, periodicals and other media of passages from a work for the purposes of study, criticism or debate, to the extent justified by the
