236 Scope of Data Protection Act

The Data Protection Act 1998 applies to all personal information processed or recorded whether automatically by computer or manually on paper1. This Act was implemented on 1 March 2000 to comply with Council Directive (EC) 95/46 on data protection and superseded the 1984 Act.

A person who determines the purposes for which and the manner in which any personal data are processed is called a data controller and must register with the Information Commissioner (formerly Data Protection Commissioner) and comply with specified data protection principles2.
