231 Human Rights Act 1998

The Human Rights Act 1998 was incorporated into UK law in October 2000 and with it not only the legislative provisions that reflect the European Convention on Human Rights but the whole body of jurisprudence that makes up the case law of the European Court of Human Rights.

Article 8 of the European Convention on Human Rights provides a right to respect for privacy and family life, and Article 10, which protects freedom of expression impact substantially on media law and in particular defamation where a balance between the two is frequently an issue.
