228 Offer to make amends and leave and licence

The Defamation Act 1996 Section 2 provides an alternative defence to a defendant who has made an innocent mistake and does not want to rely on a defence of justification, fair comment or qualified privilege. An offer to make amends must be made before a defence is served, it must be in writing and, if qualified, must set out the defamatory meaning in relation to which it is made. The offer will be to make and publish a suitable correction and apology and to pay such compensation, if any, and costs
