103 E-commerce Directive (Council Directive (EC) 2000/31)

The objective of the E-commerce Directive is to ensure the free movement of information society services within the European Union by coordinating the legislative provisions of European states within what the Directive refers to as the ‘coordinated field’1. The Directive does not apply to taxation, to the protection of personal data or the protection of privacy2, to matters covered by competition law, to notaries or equivalent professions, to the representation of a client and defence before the courts or to certain gaming activities including lotteries and betting transactions3.
