During the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries a large number of private and local Acts were passed to enable mainly private enterprises to obtain powers of compulsory acquisition of common land. Eventually, a comprehensive code of procedure for the extinguishment of rights of common and for payment of compensation to the commoners was provided by the Lands Clauses Consolidation Act 18451. This code is reproduced in the Compulsory Purchase Act 19652.
