2 Introduction to professional conduct duties

The SRA Code of Conduct 20111 (‘the Code’) forms part of the SRA Handbook (‘the Handbook’), which came into effect on 6 October 2011. It uses a new type of language to describe the role, duties and obligations of solicitors. There is now an ‘outcomes-focused and risk-based’ approach to regulation.

The Handbook is based upon ten mandatory principles, while the Code has a series of chapters on particular topics. Each of these chapters sets out lists of outcomes and indicative behaviours. The first section of the Code and the first
