81 The Charity Commission

The Charity Commission for England and Wales is a corporate statutory body regulated by the Charities Act 2011 with specific functions relating to charities established in England and Wales1.

The Commission’s objectives are2:

  1. 81.1

        to increase public trust and confidence in charities;

  2. 81.2

        to promote awareness and understanding of the operation of the public benefit requirement;

  3. 81.3

        to promote compliance by charity trustees with their legal obligations;

  4. 81.4

        to promote the effective use of charitable resources;

  5. 81.5

        to enhance the accountability of charities to donors, beneficiaries and the general public.

The Commission’s general functions are3:
